:: My Opinion is Right ... In my Opinion ::

You know what?

I am bloody sick and tired of religions. I know that this post is going to loose me basically my entire 'Friend' list, but I could care less. The people who choose to un-friend me will only be proving my point. That point being that religion causes far more problems than it solves.

A religion is an opinion, so why the hell are there so many people throwing their damned religions into other people's faces? Religion isn't even a big part of the Wizarding world, but I've seen enough on LiveJournal alone to know that religion in the Muggle world is a load of tosh.

It's even in your government. How pathetic is that? It's like a 'holy' dictatorship. Some not only dictate who a person can marry, but what you can and cannot eat, how often you can get laid - oh, and you can kill someone, just as long as you repent. What the hell is, well, hell for then? Is it really only me? Am I the only one having this massive brain cramp, the only one who can see how sodding stupid religion is?

You're probably wondering why I even care, and I'll get into that now. Religion against magic? Oh, right.

Muggles burned women on stakes for years because they were tipped off that they were a 'witch'. Did brains not develop until after the 1800's in Muggles? Honestly.

'Hark! A witch! She can turn people into toads and make a broom fly - but there is no way that she will be able to escape after I tie her to a piece of wood with rope.'

...

Did they truly not see that two neighbouring women could simply have a tiff, and all one would have to do is call 'witch' and there, problem solved, no more annoying neighbour to deal with now, because hey, she's ashes. If they were out of firewood, they'd just toss her into a lake. Um, okay. How many Muggle women did they murder before they realised that their whole 'plan' was rather -

stupid.

And let me get this straight. God doesn't mind if you nail some bloke to a cross but I'm going straight to hell because I can brew a Potion?

And people wonder why I hate Muggles.

Oh, and before you run off to post about why your religion is brilliant and holy, sod off, I have no interest in hearing it. A religion is only an opinion. No one is right, and no one is wrong. So stop being so bloody high and righteous because out of the plethora of religions out there, you think yours is the right one.

You'll die, you'll turn into compost. You're not going to go 'to the light' and see your little dog Skippy who died when you were four. Get over it. Drink, shag, swear and lie. We'll all wind up in the same place in the end, so why not enjoy it while you're here?

And hey, there always is the possibility I'm wrong - yeah right, and, if I am, just repent! Apparently the guy in charge will forgive you for anything, so there's no point in behaving really.

Come to think of it, there's no point in religion besides giving people false hope that everything will be okay in the end. Have any of you women even bothered to read the bloody bible? You're willing to live your life following a book written and re-written and re-written again by a bunch of men who claimed someone was speaking to them?

What really makes me shirty is the fact invisible people running off ten commandments in your head is considered fine and okay, but the ability to fly a broomstick is just too weird. Mm, I see the logic.

Oh - and ghosts don't exist of course! No no. We musn't believe in things that we don't understand/scare us, so we'll just not believe in it because God said so.

Hey! I think I'm getting something from him now ... No, no, it isn't the 11th commandment ...

He ... I'm getting it ... I'm getting it -

Oh!

He wants you religious psychos to jump off of a bridge.

Right now.

Go.

Don't worry about me - I'll burn myself!

*waves*

Ha, rather than making me run away and un-friend you, this post makes me respect you even more. And besides, if there really is a God, I really don't think he cares that some kid out of billions of people said something rude about him in his livejournal, so everyone who thinks he will is pretty stupid. Honestly. And, of course, you are right. I loved that bit about the witch burnings, that's something I've been saying for years.

Religion is a load of rubbish; that much is true. It's just a prefabricated bedtime story that a bunch of suckers are willing to put their lives on the line for. Then again, in an academic slant, the development of religion is an absolutely essential part of the progression of culture. Especially in ages where the lack of an omniscient diety standing over one's shoulder wagging a finger ended up in mass clan-warring and bloodshed--and because of this there was little to no communication between settlements and cultures. With the rise of Judeo-Christian doctrines came a set of laws that encouraged its followers not to kill eachother, which allowed large groups to come together. Not to mention, as it was adopted into mainstream government, it became engrained into human ethics as well. So, I guess you could say that, besides being the great sociological and philosophical motivator, we have religion to thank for our ability to progress into the peak of our culture.

However, now it just seems superfluous. Humans have reached the status of God, disproved him through science, and yet there seems to be a need for people to cling to these fairytales in hopes that maybe, they're better than the other animals on the earth just because they've been given reason. It's not like we're the only creatures capable of self-conciousness; but we're the only ones capable of reasoning right vs. wrong, so in the end we feel self-concious in the modern sense of the word.

I guess, yes, once upon a time it was important, but now it's lost all meaning. This so-called "God" is long dead, and we've got nothing to gain from staying loyal to such a grounding force. Its old-world sensibilities are keeping us stuck from evolving further, which is kind of sad and pathetic, and a way. But whatever. Just some thoughts on the subject.

Also, finding a religious person on livejournal is like finding a needle in a haystack. It exists, but the fact still stands that the internet is a veritable breeding ground for heathens.

I mean, while I don't actually know if there really is a God, I think that the ones who do really ought to think all of this through.

Yes, so Draco and his lot are wizards and witches, and yes, they learn spells and make potions.

But really, why is that all so horrible?

Why is that a sin?

I honestly don't get that...

I don't mind religions as long as people don't force me to think about them a whole lot. And the person above me makes a good point, that religion made humans get ethics and so on; but also, wars happened because people of different religions couldn't get along. People were killed and tortured in the name of God. People literally hate other people because they are different religions. In my opinion, religion has caused more strife than ended strife. But I don't mind other people being a certain religion as long as they keep it to themselves, and the people of the same religion.

In short, I agree with you, only not as bluntly.

Good for you. Anyone who chooses to un-friend you for this is just a hypocrite. It's your journal and you have every right to express your opinion. If they don't like it they can just ignore it. Most religious extremists act like that, unfortunately. It's one of those...well, given things. There are always going to be people who are going to go ahead and tell you that you're going to hell for such and so reason because you don't belong to their religion.

Personally, I find religion not to be an obsession--but a way of living. Before you jump the gun on me, and decide that what I'm going to say is ridiculous, give me a moment to explain. Jesus Christ (who has been proven to be a real person, at least, to my current knowledge) set the standards for how people should live and interact with one another. He did not promote hate, and he did not promote racism. He taught that everyone should interact with each other in a positive way. I don't see that as a bad thing.

A lot of people throw out the baby with the bathwater when it comes to religion. A better view of religion would be what you can take from it, and how your life reflects what you took in a positive manner. A lot of people have a hard time with that, because we're all human--everyone is a hypocrite in one way or another. No one can use that as an excuse to not believe, and/or understand certain elements of the world. But before you decide to go ahead and rip apart religion for its human discrepancies, look beyond it and see what you can get out of it instead of what is merely visible on the surface.

Sorry that some one seems to have completely pissed you off about religion in general. It's always been a sore spot for me that there are people out there that can't look past the edge or their noses, because they think just because they're religious, they can act self righteous and lay blame to everyone but themselves. There's always going to be psycho people in every aspect of life, including religion. But, I'm religious myself...when I mean religious, I mean, Christian. I don't throw anything in people's faces...I don't poke people's eyes out for sinning and I most certainly don't pretend to be pious...because if I did that, I'd be the worst kind of hypocrite. No one is perfect. I'm just trying to say that all people that are into religion aren't racists, haters and biggots. There are some that are quite the opposite, like me. For what it's worth...I'm just telling you all of this so you can have a different perspective on this and to show you that we all aren't nuts. lol

but when i think about the witch trials i don't really see it as a religious problem. i kind of get the feeling that the people in charge knew perfectly well that they weren't dealing with witches, that what they did wasn't for the sake of anything they believed in, but rather simple spite. maybe not. maybe i'm giving them too much credit. i don't know.

i do know that i loved this entry. have faith in your friends list, dear dragon (certainly more faith than you would in paltry religious dogma, in any case). i doubt you'll be unfriended nearly as much as you seem to think (just judging by the comments already posted).

(Defriend you? For stating your opinion? Naw. I respect you too much to do that. :D)

Religion, like everything else, offers a set of ideals and an opportunity for people to do whatever they want, knowing they'll get off if only they repent.

Not to mention it gives people a sense that, once you belong to a faith, you've got this new superpower that allows you to decide the fates of the non-believers ("If you repent of your sins you will achieve Heaven/Nirvana/Summerland/Valhalla/etc."), on their beliefs alone.

Me, I'll just sit here and watch them tear each other to pieces.

"If God didn't exist, everything would be possible.”

I believe in this. We often make decisions solely based on our faith. It limits us from exploring all aspects of life primarily because we fear the punishment god may give us for going against his will. Truly, if God did not exist, we will not be too dependent on what He can provide us, and at the same time, we will not fear to explore and live our lives to the fullest. Without a god, our belief about good and evil wouldn't exist as well; without the rules and the limitations, we wouldn't have any basis of comparison. We will find ourselves having all of this unlimited freedom, but we have no idea what is good and what is bad.

I thought you were supposed to have faith in your religion. Isn't your religion supposed to give you the strength and courage to stand up and say whatever you have to? By posting anonymously, you're only proving how much of a ruddy coward you truly are. If you are truly proud of your faith, you would proudly stand up for it, and sign your name with the confidence that you're right.

I guess my post made you realise that your religion is really a heaping pile of steaming rubbish, hence why you couldn't dig up the nerve within yourself to sign with your name. Did you truly not realise how brilliantly you just proved my point?

Oh yes, everyone agrees with me because they're 'fangirls', because Merlin knows deep down they are all religious people.

Did it never occur to you how disgustingly ignorant and blind you are when it comes to the rest of the world? Do you really think everyone follows a religion? Get over yourself you worthless little Mudblood. I'd tell you where to go, but I'm guessing you spend every Sunday sat on a hard bench singing about a river, so we all know you have a V.I.P pass upstairs, right?

Religions are indeed horrible in my humble opinion...Especially since things like the Holocaust have ocurred because of disagreements on religion. But on the other hand, religions give us something to rely on when we have nothing else. It can inspire us into having unwavering faith. Not that I'm saying I have said faith....because I SURELY don't. But I know a friend who does. And he's amazing.

I think religions serve their purpose. You have to take a step back and survey both sides of this debate, I think.

I'm not personally religious, as I seem to be one of the few people on the planet (besides you, obviously) who can handle the thought that there is no afterlife and no grand purpose and no Loving Parent watching out for us....but I can see how some insecure people would need the reassurance.

So I have no problem with religion and religious people, on a one-to-one basis. It's when they all get together that they cause problems.

Especially when they have guns.

Or when they've bought the Presidency. *shudder*
